Broken Glass

Dear fab friends,

Who would have thought that this so very delicate diva friend of yours would venture out to Kilburn just to see an off West End production of the Arthur Miller play "Broken Glass". Where the hell is Kilburn? Honestly, I still don't know where it is exactly.

The later plays of Arthur Miller are generally deemed second-rate to his earlier plays such as All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, or The Crucible. So why venture out to Kilburn's Tricycle Theatre just to see it? Ah, my dear lovelies, but it would be wrong to categorize Broken Glass as second-rate, as I belatedly realized. This is a well-constructed and perplexing play with superb performances from Sir Antony Sher and Tara Fitzgerald. The play revolves around a Jewish couple living in Brooklyn. The wife is suddenly unable to walk after the news of the Kristallnacht - or the Night of Broken Glass - in 1938 when the Nazis in Berlin smashed windows and destroyed Jewish homes and synagogues. Miller cleverly mirrors the two events - how fear can literally cripple lives.

This fab's verdict: Highly Recommended. Do catch this play before the West End transfer. But then again, you might consider catching it in the West End rather than in Kilburn where you might have to walk over broken glass yourselves. Broken Glass will transfer to the Vaudeville in the Strand from September 14 to December 10.

Yours,

La Dolce Vita
