Jolie-Laide

Gentle readers:

You have got to love the French for coming up with a term to describe something that is ugly and beautiful at the same time. I remember all too well my initial reaction to the Prada doctor's bag, Jeff Koons' art, the return of acid wash, or even the first time I laid eyes on Bette Davis' eyes. After a while, you begin to observe how interesting it all is and ultimately you are left with the impression of a deeper and more profound kind of beauty, one that transcends the banality of mere prettiness.

That is exactly what's going on here. The models seem to be playing some sort of dance video game while wearing the latest fall/winter fashions from Lanvin. Head designer Alber Elbaz even does a cute cameo at the end.

No, it's not pretty in a conventional sense. No, models cannot be expected to dance like they were auditioning for roles in another "Fame" remake. It's almost as if it dares you to look past the awkward dancing and cheesy music and focus instead on the gorgeous visual elements: the sumptuous decor, the impossibly glamorous models, and of course, the highly directional couture. Yes, it's not for everyone and yes, it's the kind of viral video that is designed to be polarizing. Then again, like the best and most brilliant fashion campaigns, it gets noticed, gets the job done, you can't look away and in the end, the power of the images is what remains.

Goofy is the new chic! Vive le différence!

P.S. I am not a fan of the men's Amish hats, a disturbing trend this season if you ask me.

  2. Mmwah, Primrose! Nice of you to show up finally. Lovely blog! I like the Amish hots but I not everyone wears them. Only a select few can carry the look.
