Dear fab friends,
We fancied him in Gattaca, adored him in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and fell in love with him in Cold Mountain.
Now Jude Law stars in the current production of Eugene O'Neill's play "Anna Christie" at the Donmar Warehouse. He plays the shipwrecked Irish stoker, Mat, who falls instantly in love with Anna Christie, the eponymous heroine who has a secret past.
When Law first appears on stage, swept in by a stormy sea, we first see only his sinewy arms holding tight to an equally sinewy rope. He then climbs on to the stage wet, greasy, bearded and shirtless. This is so unlike the clean, good-looking leading man that we have so far pictured him to be. Here, he is raw, tough and muscular. When he is happy, he displays Irish charm and humor. When he woes Anna Christie's affection, he is tender and vulnerable. But when he is enraged, he is terrifying - violently hurling chairs and angrily lifting beds with startling power and force.
Jude Law gives his best performance I have ever seen. He delivers with so much passion, intensity and rawness. In Anna Christie, he has definitely earned my respect.
Yours,
Dolce Vita
Hmmm... Jude Law as a stroker. What is there not to like?
